When your body needs water and you don’t drink, it could cause serious damage to your nervous system. It not just about drinking water, it is also important for you to ingest foods with high water content. It is recommended that we drink two to three liters of water daily even if you are particularly not thirsty.
Some of its benefits are:
It lubricates the joints in your body. The cartilage that is found in the joints and the disks of the spine contain around eighty percent water, dehydration after a long time can reduce the shock absorbing ability leading to inconveniences like joint pain.
Water is largely responsible for the formation of saliva and mucus. The saliva is what helps us digest the food we eat and keeps the eyes, nose and mouth moist which prevents friction and damage. Water also helps keep the mouth clean. Water can help reduce tooth decay if taken in place of sweetened beverages.
Water delivers oxygen throughout the body. Blood is basically 90% water and blood carries oxygen to different parts of the body.
Water helps with your skin’s health and beauty. When you ignore drinking water, your skin tends to be more vulnerable to skin disorders and premature wrinkling.
Water acts as a cushion for the brain, spinal cord and other sensitive tissue in your body. Water takes part in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Dehydration could affect the brain structure and its functioning leading to problems with thinking and reasoning.
It regulates the body temperature. Water that is stored in the middle layers of the skin comes up the surface of the skin as sweat when the body is heating up as this sweat evaporates it cools the body. When there is not enough water in the body, the storage of heat increases and the individual is less able to tolerate the heat strain. Having a lot of water in the body may reduce physical strain if heat stress occurs during exercise.
